For users accustomed to online wikis like the Web service Wikipedia, this freeware app is a great find. Whether you're into comparative literature or computer programming, you're going to need to take and organize notes.

The big bonus with WikidPid is that, like Wikipedia, you can link notes from one to another in various paths, but like Notepad, everything is localized. The layout will be familiar to users of Notepad and the more advanced Notepad analogues like NoteTab Light.

The left pane is a tree of nodes, while the main window displays the wiki page you're currently viewing. The trick is getting familiar enough with the wiki format.

Once the user is comfortable with it, though, WikidPad helps you wikify any aspect of your work, or even your life. The stand-alone, open-source app sports some useful features to help you along, including the absolutely essential on-the-fly linking. This occurs based on CamelCase and other criteria outlined in the included WikidPad documentation. Reading said documentation is equally essential before using the app, and the app could benefit from some clear and concise tutorials, or links to ones online. Even with this steep learning curve, WikidPad's utility can't be understated. If you find it works well for academic classes, it's easy to use the software to track information, schedules, and news for athletic teams, community projects, and other personal pursuits.

From WikidPad is a wiki-like notebook for storing your thoughts, ideas, to-do lists, contacts, or anything else you can think of to write down. What makes wikidPad different from other notepad/outliner applications is the ease with which you can cross-link your information. Links in a wiki are created by typing in WikiWords. A WikiWord is any mixed case word typed into the editor.

To-do List or JohnDoe are example WikiWords. The term wiki means 'quick' in Hawaiian, and wikidPad is all about quickly linking your information together. Features include on the fly WikiWord linking, auto-completion, attribute based document indexing, incremental search, text styling, export to HTML, auto-save.

New to me apps that are blowing my mind right now: nLite (customized WindowsXP builds; got XP down to 70mb for Qemu, can also integrate drivers for physical machines) QemuManager (Fast VM on any machine, even with no Admin) TightVNC (for helping newbs remotely) FSViewer (wow! So many uses in 1 app, owns picasa) ASuite (amazing like PStart, only actively being developed) If the real world ever quits harassing me, I'll get some games. Probably adventure game studio stuff. Really looking forward to the new Quest for Glory 2 remake. Noureahu, I am impressed! That is an outstanding collection! I gotta try some of those that are new to me.

I have tons of space (usb hard-drive), so I'm not too concerned with app size, but I do look for fewer titles that happen to be multifunctional instead of having 6 apps that all basically do the same thing. For instance, I use ZIP format exclusively (Uncle Joe would plotz if I sent him a rar or 7z file), so Free Commander fills my bill. Opsimathic, thanks for the heads-up.
